About
Forge builds on the AUTOMATIC1111 Stable Diffusion WebUI, taking its name from Minecraft Forge to signal its role as an experimentation platform for the original UI. Created by lllyasviel, the author of ControlNet, it tracks SD WebUI 1.10.1 and syncs with upstream roughly every 90 days, so existing checkpoints and many extensions carry over. Its main contributions are a rewritten GPU memory management system that lowers VRAM requirements and speeds up inference, and a Unet patcher that lets developers modify the diffusion process at the UNet level without invasive forks. Model support extends beyond upstream to Flux, including NF4 and GGUF quantized variants, alongside SDXL, LoRAs, ControlNets, IP-Adapters, and InstantID, all within a Gradio 4 interface that adds canvas tools with pen pressure sensitivity. One-click Windows packages bundle CUDA and PyTorch. Released under the AGPL-3.0 license, it suits users on modest GPUs and developers testing new diffusion techniques.
