Sweep began as an open-source AI developer that turned GitHub issues into pull requests: given a bug report or feature request, it would read the repository, plan a change, write the code, and open a PR for human review, handling small fixes, features, and refactors. That issue-to-PR system, released under the Apache 2.0 license, remains public in the sweepai/sweep repository but is no longer the team's focus. Sweep has since pivoted to an AI coding assistant delivered as a plugin for JetBrains IDEs, bringing code assistance directly into IntelliJ-family editors rather than operating autonomously on GitHub. The original project still interests developers studying autonomous coding agents or wanting a self-hostable reference for issue-driven automation, while the current product targets JetBrains users who want an assistant inside their IDE. The repository sees little active development now that the team's effort has moved to the commercial plugin.
